How to Register for Classes
All students register for courses online using the WebReg feature on the Student Link. Through this system you may:
- Use a student planner to map out your course selections prior to the start of registration. This function will allow you to submit all courses at once, instead of requiring you to key in each individual class on registration day.
- View course titles, descriptions, meeting times, start/end dates, and classroom location.
- Register for courses once registration begins.
Please note that students who are not compliant with the University will be prohibited from registering for courses. For more information on WebReg, please visit the University Registrar’s web site.
To view the schedule, find the “Academics” tab on the Student Link, then click “University Class Schedule” listed below it. You may then select the semester you wish to view as well as “QST” as the school. (Please note that undergraduate classes are included in the schedule, so look for classes numbered above 600.)
View step-by-step instructions (with screen-shots) on how to register and use the planner.
Course and Section Labeling

- X – PEMBA core courses that are reserved for PEMBA cohorted students only (6:30-9:15pm)
Course Overlap Policy
Students cannot be registered in two or more classes that meet at the same time as listed on the published schedule.
Registration for Non-Questrom Courses
Course enrollments are controlled by the respective schools and colleges within Boston University. For enrollment in a non-Questrom course you may first try adding the course on WebReg. If you are prevented from adding the course you will need to speak with the appropriate school for enrollment. To use non-Questrom courses toward your degree, you must have the prior approval of both the host school and the MBA Center. For approval, complete a BU Graduate Elective Request Form and submit it along with a course description and syllabus at least two weeks prior to the start of the class to your advisor. You will be notified of a decision within two weeks.
Full-Time Status
Individuals who register for 12 or more credits are considered full-time students by the University and are charged a flat full-time tuition rate during the academic year, which covers 12-18 credits. International students on a student visa are required to be enrolled full-time each academic semester. Full-time international students may, with the permission of the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO), enroll less than full-time in their final semester of study. International students with an H-1 visa who have been full-time throughout their enrollment may enroll part-time in their last semester of study.
Prerequisites
Prerequisites for all courses are listed on the schedule, and it is important that you read them. Faculty members expect students to have all relevant prerequisites. Students without a prerequisite may be asked to drop the course.
Closed Courses & Waitlists
If a class is full (zero seats available), it will say “closed” on the Student Link. You can request to be on the waitlist for a course by filling out this form. If a seat becomes available in the requested course, students will be registered in the order in which we received their request. Courses listed as open for enrollment with instructor’s permission may be added by having the instructor sign a completed Course Adjustment Form.
Adding/Dropping a Course
You may add or drop courses online using the WebReg system on the Student Link. Standard courses may be added during the first 2 weeks of the semester only. Courses may be dropped using WebReg until the last posted day to drop with a ‘W’ grade. Please click on a specific semester on the upper left to view semester specific add/drop dates. For information on non-standard courses, please click on the date range listed below the course when viewing the schedule on the Student Link. For courses that are restricted from online registration, or for students who are unable to access WebReg, you may complete a Course Adjustment Form and drop it off at the Graduate Academic & Career Development Center.
- Dropping All Classes (Withdrawal/Leave of Absence): During the Fall and Spring semesters, WebReg will not allow you to drop all of your classes. If you want to drop all of your classes, or if you do not plan to enroll during a particular Fall or Spring semester, you must complete a Withdrawal/Leave of Absence Form with your assigned advisor. Reminder: If you withdraw or take a leave of absence after the start of classes, Student Accounts will only refund a portion of your tuition based on the Withdrawal/Refund Schedule published by the University Registrar. Additionally, students may not withdraw from a semester in which they already have a posted grade.
- Dropping a Course in the Summer: Students may withdraw from a course in either summer session using the Student Link prior to the first day of the summer session. If the drop is processed prior to the first day of either term, full tuition and fees will be credited or refunded. If the drop is processed on or after the first day of either summer session and before the published drop date, the student is responsible for the registration fee only. If the drop is processed after the date published by the MBA Center, the student is responsible for the full tuition and fees and will receive a ‘W’ for the course. Unlike the Fall and Spring semesters, students can drop all of their summer session courses using the Student Link’s WebReg.
Overloading
Please keep in mind that once students meet their degree requirements, they will graduate from the program. Students cannot take additional courses beyond the semester in which they have completed their degree requirements.
Standard full-time tuition covers 12-18 credits per semester. All full-time students can automatically take up to 18 credits per semester. Overloading is registering for more than 18 credits in a semester. Every additional credit beyond 18 credits will incur per-credit charges. If your program requires you to take a course load beyond 18 credits, you will automatically be granted an overload covering the additional charges.
Note: There are different overload policies varying by program and start date, please see the Course Overload Policy & Form page for full information.
FAQs
Q: Why can I not find any graduate courses when I search the schedule on the Student Link?
A: When searching the class schedule on the Student Link, please be sure to search “QST” as the college. Courses will be numbered in the 700s for core classes and 800s for electives. Courses 500 and below are undergraduate courses.
Q: When I try to register, why am I not finding the courses I am looking for?
A: When registering for courses, please be sure you are looking at the correct semester. When you go to the “Registration” section of the Student Link please be sure to select “REG Options” under the appropriate semester. If you wish to register for a fall course, your current spring schedule will appear first so you must scroll down to reach your fall record.
Q: Why can I not register?
A: Boston University requires that all students be compliant in five areas in order to register for courses. In order to be compliant, students must have:
- Settled their student account for the current semester.
- Met all immunization requirements.
- Provided BU with an emergency alert phone number and updated/verified this emergency number each semester.
- Acknowledged the Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Law (all out-of-state students must sign an acknowledgement that they have been informed of the law; compliance required in the Fall semester only).
- Provided a current local address.
If you do not comply with any of the above items, your registration will be blocked for all future semesters. To check your compliance status, please click ‘compliance status’ under the purple ‘personal’ tab on the Student Link.
