Dean<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">By now you have seen the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/president\/letter-to-the-community-on-coronavirus-followup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">update from President Brown<\/span><\/a><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u00a0regarding\u00a0university operations and the near-term plans for continuing classroom instruction\u00a0online until at least April 13th.\u00a0I want to reassure you that we are absolutely committed\u00a0to adapting our\u00a0practices\u00a0in the midst of the coronavirus\u00a0pandemic\u00a0while also\u00a0working to\u00a0ensure that our\u00a0students\u00a0successfully complete\u00a0their\u00a0semester.\u00a0I\u00a0write today to provide some\u00a0context\u00a0for\u00a0Questrom-specific questions that you may have.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>ALL STAFF AND FACULTY ARE ENCOURAGED TO WORK FROM HOME TO THE EXTENT POSSIBLE, WHILE ALSO ENSURING CONTINUITY OF CORE OPERATIONS<\/b><\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">To reiterate the President\u2019s message, students will study and attend classes remotely from their homes or dorms (if necessary). Our responsibility is to continue to provide academic and administrative services to our faculty and students. The mandate is to maintain normal levels of service, while at the same time taking appropriate precautions to protect the health and well-being of the members of our community.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Our goal is to promote social distancing for the purpose of minimizing and preventing any potential spread of the virus. We will achieve this by eliminating in-person staff meetings, minimizing the use of public transit, curtailing engagements with crowds in public spaces, and creating opportunities to work from home not from coffee shops, or co-working spaces.\u00a0 This will require a unit-by-unit, project-by-project determination and conversation within teams.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">All managers will review their department to assess what work and services must be done on campus and what can be done remotely.\u00a0\u00a0Associate Dean JP\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"spellingerror\">Matychak<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u00a0(<\/span><a href=\"mailto:matychak@bu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">matychak@bu.edu<\/span><\/a><span class=\"normaltextrun\">)\u00a0will follow up with more information on creating your Continuity of Operations Plans.\u00a0He\u00a0stands ready to help with any\u00a0of these conversations to ensure that we respect individual needs, ensure that we meet operational\u00a0responsibilities, and contribute to the collective effort to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>PHYSICAL PRESENCE WILL NOT BE REQUIRED FOR ANY MEMBERS OF OUR<\/b><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>\u00a0COMMUNITY, WHERE PARTICIPATION IS POSSIBLE DIGITALLY\u00a0<\/b><\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Our operative philosophy is that we are not expecting physical presence to conduct our work where alternative solutions, such as working remotely\/digitally, are possible.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">To ensure that continuity of operations is in effect and to conduct regular business will require the following: proper accesses (e.g. VPN where applicable), current passwords for access to University databases, ability to move files from\u00a0shared\u00a0drives\u00a0to the OneDrive to reduce burden on\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/remote\/vpn\/use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">VPN<\/span><\/a><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u00a0usage, call forwarding from office phones to cell phones, functional proficiency in online platforms and databases etc.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Tools such as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/conf\/online\/zoom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Zoom<\/span><\/a><span class=\"normaltextrun\">, and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/conf\/online\/microsoft-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Microsoft Teams<\/span><\/a><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u00a0will be essential for remote access and continuous internal and external communications while we maximize social distancing while maintaining productivity.\u00a0 Classes will continue to use\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"spellingerror\">QuestromTools<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">\u00a0as the learning management platform for course materials, readings, and assignment submission. For live class sessions, faculty and students will use Zoom. If prolonged, sustained work is not available remotely other options must be considered such as use of paid time off or FMLA. When using video technology ensure the visual you are projecting is professional.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Be aware that Questrom does not assume responsibility for operating costs, equipment, home maintenance, or other costs incurred by employees in the use of their homes or other alternative work locations. When available and appropriate, employees may be issued university-owned equipment for use in work-from-home arrangements; however, the equipment is to be used only by the employee to perform authorized university business. The employee is responsible for protecting it from theft, damage, and unauthorized use. Computer security requirements must be met for all staff members working from home.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>WHAT SHOULD I\u00a0EXPECT IN THE WEEKS TO COME?<\/b><\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">All classes will resume\u00a0remotely\u00a0on Monday, March 16<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><sup>th<\/sup> at their regularly scheduled times.\u00a0\u00a0In early April a determination will be made about returning to on-campus sessions and meetings as of Monday, April 13<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0Further communications will be shared as new information and direction\u00a0is distributed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>WHAT CHANGES SHOULD I EXPECT IN QUESTROM FACILITIES?<\/b><\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">During this time, the Hariri Building\u00a0and all parking facilities\u00a0will be open. Student\u00a0access will be restricted to floors 1-4.\u00a0In an effort to\u00a0reduce the spread of the virus, we will be\u00a0closing spaces that accommodate small and large groups. To that end,\u00a0students\u00a0<b><u>will not<\/u>\u00a0<\/b>have access to the following: team rooms, classrooms, student lounges,\u00a0and the computer labs in Hariri.\u00a0The Pardee Library will be open during this time. In addition, Breadwinners and Starbucks will be open Monday \u2013 Friday, 8am-2:30pm.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><b>WILL UNIVERSITY AND SCHOOL RELATED EVENTS AND MEETINGS CONTINUE DURING THIS TIME?<\/b><\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">No in-person meetings or events may take place on-campus, including academic and advising meetings with students.
