There is no universally agreed upon optimal team size, but faculty should consider the task at hand, and form teams that are large enough to accomplish the tasks in the provided time, and small enough that members can contribute meaningfully to the assignment (Katzenbach &amp; Smith, 1993). For student teams, many authors agree that teams of 3-5 is an appropriate guideline (Oakley, Felder, Brent, &amp; Elhajj, 2004).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun BCX9 SCXW111676134\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX9 SCXW111676134\">In terms of assigning students to teams, instructors have a few options, and each has pros and cons:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Randomly assigned<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\u2714\u00a0Effortless to create. Increases diversity of perspectives on the team.<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\u2714 The team may take longer to develop, which can delay task accomplishment. More conflict is possible.<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<li><strong>Self-selected<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\u2714 Effortless to create. May take less time to develop as a team, which reduces process losses.<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\u2714 Can be less inclusive and diverse, as students are likely to select teammates they already know and enjoy working with.<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<li><strong>Assigned after surveying student interest\/capability<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\u2714 Teams are likely to be balanced in terms of skill and ability.<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\u2714 Time must be invested in team development.<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><!--close column table wrapper. Homogenous teams will form and build cohesiveness quickly but will be limited in terms of a range of abilities and perspectives, so they are better used for routine or simple tasks. Faculty often find it difficult to account for individual differences in contributions by team members, even when those differences are extreme (either significantly poor performance, or outstanding contributions).
