These servers are actively being retired. For all <b>new<\/b> accounts please refer to the information above.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-av_textblock-0366cc7376be6c9e82a3e9cc8987b64f '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h3>Access Stata on Windows<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Setup X-Win32 on Windows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download and install X-Win32 following<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/desktop\/software\/windows\/x-win32\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> these instructions from the BU IT Help Center<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>After setting up the software open X-Win32 and click \u201cManual\u201d under the New Connection section on the right<\/li>\n<li>Choose SSH and click next<\/li>\n<li>Enter the following details:\n<ol>\n<li>Connection Name: smgresearch1<\/li>\n<li>Host: smgresearch1.bu.edu<\/li>\n<li>Login: Enter the login name you were provided<\/li>\n<li>Command: \/usr\/bin\/xterm<\/li>\n<li>Password: Enter the password you set<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click save<\/li>\n<li>Choose smgresearch1 from the list and click launch<\/li>\n<li>To run the Stata application type xstata at the prompt<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Setup FileZilla on Windows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download and install the <a href=\"https:\/\/filezilla-project.org\/download.php?show_all=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest version from this page<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Open FileZilla<\/li>\n<li>Click file and then site manager<\/li>\n<li>Click new site<\/li>\n<li>Enter the following details:\n<ol>\n<li>Host: smgresearch1.bu.edu<\/li>\n<li>Port: 22<\/li>\n<li>Protocol: sftp<\/li>\n<li>Logon type: Normal<\/li>\n<li>User:\u00a0Enter the login name you were provided<\/li>\n<li>Password:\u00a0Enter the password you set<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click connect<\/li>\n<li>You may now upload\/download files from your computer to\/from the server<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- close content main div --><\/div><\/div><div id='x11'  class='avia-section av-av_section-38e5403efc36aeb05d443fee18a65992 main_color avia-section-default avia-no-shadow  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_section  avia-builder-el-last  avia-bg-style-scroll container_wrap fullsize'  ><div class='container av-section-cont-open' ><div class='template-page content  av-content-full alpha units'><div class='post-entry post-entry-type-page post-entry-4239'><div class='entry-content-wrapper clearfix'>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-av_textblock-0366cc7376be6c9e82a3e9cc8987b64f '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h3>X11 on Mac<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Locating or Installing X11<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mac OS X versions 10.5 through 10.7 include a pre-installed version of X11.\u00a0Look for it in Applications-&gt;Utilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) or higher, you will need to\u00a0<a title=\"XQuartz\" href=\"https:\/\/xquartz.macosforge.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download X11 from the XQuartz project<\/a>, and install it following the on-screen instructions after opening\u00a0XQuartz-2.<em>x<\/em>.dmg\u00a0and double-clicking\u00a0XQuartz.pkg.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Using X11<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"bodytypeTimes\">Open the\u00a0X11\u00a0application, located in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder.<\/li>\n<li class=\"bodytypeTimes\">An xterm window will open automatically when you start X11. In this window, you will type one of two commands, depending on the version of Mac OS X that you are using. (If you don\u2019t know which version you are using, you can figure it out by going to the Apple Menu and selecting \u201cAbout this Mac\u201d.)\n<ul>\n<li>If you are using Mac OS X\u00a010.4.0 or higher, the command to enter is<br \/>\n<code>ssh -Y yourlogin@smgresearch1.bu.edu<\/code>\u00a0(substitute your own BU login name for\u00a0<em>yourlogin<\/em>\u00a0and substitute smgresearch1\u00a0for another machine, if applicable).<\/li>\n<li>If you are using Mac OS X\u00a010.3.0 \u2013 10.3.9, the command to enter is<br \/>\n<code>ssh -X yourlogin@smgresearch1.bu.edu<\/code>\u00a0(substitute your own BU login name for\u00a0<em>yourlogin<\/em>\u00a0and substitute smgresearch1\u00a0for another machine, if applicable).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"bodytypeTimes\">Type your password when prompted. This password will be either one that was provided to your or your Kerberos password depending on the server.<\/li>\n<li class=\"bodytypeTimes\">Now you can launch X Windows applications. To run SAS, for example, type<br \/>\nsas &amp;\u00a0(the \u2018&amp;\u2019 puts it in the background so that you can type other commands in your xterm window if you need to).<\/li>\n<li class=\"bodytypeTimes\">When you\u2019re done, quit out of any X applications you were running.
