Ahmedabad, India: Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA)
SEWA is a trade union that organizes poor, self-employed women workers who earn a living through their own labor or small business. The main objective of SEWA is to empower poor, marginalized and semi-skilled women to become self-reliant. SEWA creates skill-building programs to motivate women to become entrepreneurs and not limit themselves to labor work. SEWA is a prominent organisation that has links to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
Interns will work alongside students from both Newcastle University and the #1 ranked Indian Institute of Management- IIM-Ahmedabad on marketing, branding, and website development. There are two main SEWA projects for 2016 to which students will be assigned. The first is with RUDI Multitrading Company Limited & Women in Technology, a marketing company promoting rural farm produce (mainly spices and staple foods). The produce is procured directly from farmers and processed, packed and marketed by rural women. Rudi internally rotates the rural producers to enhance quality, capacity and efficiency of production through the use of better technology. SEWA helps RUDI distribute its products in 14 districts of Gujarat, selling produce through a unique network of ‘Rudiben’ women who sell the goods. This cuts out middle men and improves the socio-economic development of underprivileged rural people. Previous students have helped Rudi prepare a business strategy and carry out sales analysis. The second project will look at Women in Technology and students will be required to create social and digital media strategies for various areas of SEWA’s operations. More details to come.
SEWA seeks students who have novel ideas and approaches to contribute to their organization. Students will be in the field, interacting freely with the grassroots members, so they should be open and adaptable in all kinds of experiences, including those with heat and dust. When students conduct fieldwork and surveys on rural sites, transport, accommodation, and food will be provided. They will have the chance to complete field trips to surrounding villages around Ahmedabad and may also be required to stay overnight in villages as part of field work (accompanied at all times by someone from SEWA). Last year’s interns traveled extensively as part of field work and were also able to visit Rani Ki Vav World Heritage Site and Udaipur, Rajasthan. Learn more by reviewing blog posts of previous interns and by reading the position descriptions provided by SEWA and by a former intern. Please note, Newcastle runs the selection process for this program. It is not open to students who are citizens of India as it’s meant to designed to introduce non-natives to the country. 2 positions available.

Interns will collaborate with students from Newcastle, Groningen and Xiamen Universities to conduct a research project under the direction of FSB’s North East Development Manager Simon Hanson. Last year’s interns worked on a project on open data, and how the North-East region can help local businesses use open data to improve their performance. An article on the work last year’s interns did can be found here. 2016 interns will be divided into one of two teams to work on the following projects:
1) Civic Technology: Civic tech is technology (mainly IT) that enables engagement or participation of the public for stronger development, enhancing citizen communications and improving government infrastructure. Definitions of civic tech are broad and it will be up to you to formulate a definition and make suggestions as to how businesses and councils in the region can use it. The FSB would like a group of 4 students to look at what civic tech is, examples of best practice from around the world and how the FSB can encourage councils to think differently to incorporate a civic tech agenda into their strategy.
2) Government Technology: this is broadly the technology infrastructure that state and local government departments use to do their internal work or deliver services to their customers, ie. their citizens. With 89,000+ government entities at just the local level and 22 Million civil servants nationwide, the diversity of technology tools used to operate the “business” of government is extremely broad. Government uses technology to manage internal projects and procurement, to track infrastructure, to regulate zoning — to name just a few examples. Government also uses external/citizen-facing tools to deliver health care, collect taxes/fees, to issue licenses and permits, to convene citizens, to manage water and sewer, and so on. Students will work to define what government technology is, best practice from around the world, with the overall aim of changing the mindset of government leaders in the North-East, so that gov tech strategies can be implemented.
Students working on both projects will need to be comfortable analyzing data sets and will also get the opportunity to work on marketing strategies for both the civic and government tech initiatives. Students may indicate a preference of project in their applications. 2 positions available.
