Step 6: What’s next?

During Orientation, you’ll learn a lot about Questrom generally.  And once you’ve finished your session, you’ll be able to meet with your academic advisor if you’d like to.  If you’re not 100% sure you’ve picked the right classes, want to discuss your goals for your first year, or just want to get to know your academic advisor, we’ll be happy to meet with you through virtual drop-ins.  Please see your email for more information on connecting with academic advising resources in June, July, and August.

As we approach the start of the school year, we’ll transition away from this Questrom Orientation website and towards a number of other sites you’ll find helpful:

  • questromworld.bu.edu/udc – The UDC’s main page.  Go here for all things Academic Advising.  Curriculum, concentrations, policies, and forms!
  • Blackboard – Blackboard is a learning management system your professors will use to communicate with you.  There you’ll find your syllabi, course assignments, gradebook, and a dashboard of announcements.
  • questromapps.bu.edu – On QuestromApps, you’ll find the Questrom events calendar, the faculty and staff directories, team room reservations, and many other helpful resources

You may know exactly what you want your next four years to look like or you may have no idea.  Either way, that’s okay! College is about growth and change and there’s plenty of time to decide what you want to do.

If you’re itching to start working on a long term plan, feel free to download this Hub Curriculum Tracking Sheet and Course Planning Template.  They’re helpful tools you use on your own or with your advisor.  If you’d like to meet with your advisor about your long term plan, great! We recommend that you wait until after you’re settled into your new college routine (think mid to late October) to meet with an Advisor about long terms plans.

An Intro to Questrom Information Technology Services:

In line with the Questrom School of Business’s mission statement to “create value for the world”, the goal of Information Technology Services (ITS) is to leverage the use of information technology resources upon the production and delivery of business education. The department provides computer and communications support, as well as software development, for the School community. Examples include a school-wide course management application, on-line and workshop training, collaboration tools, data resources and information repositories. You will meet members of the Questrom ITS staff at the beginning of the school year, but in the meantime, you can reach us at questromhelp@bu.edu if you should have questions.

Things to Do:

There are a few simple but critical things that every student must accomplish before the start of the semester. Below is a check-list of what must be done starting with creating your BU email which is required before you can gain access to Questrom School of Business specific resources.

Setting up your Active Directory:

Microsoft Windows Active Directory (AD) is networking technology used by Questrom School of Business. You need an AD account to access lab computers and to access Questrom-specific applications and websites.

To create your AD account:

  1. Open your web browser and go to https://www.bu.edu/computing/accounts/ad/smg
  2. Click the “Log in” button
  3. In the two fields provided, enter your BU login name (email address without the “@bu.edu”) and Kerberos password and click “Log in”
  4. Confirm your current Kerberos password and click “Continue”
  5. Read the short warning about keeping your Kerberos password private, then check the box to indicate you have read the warning and click “Continue”.
  6. You should come to a page that says “Your request has been approved.” This message is the only confirmation you will receive. Your AD account will be available soon. If you are having any difficulty, please contact the helpdesk at questromhelp@bu.edu.

During Orientation, you’ll learn a lot about Questrom generally.  But before we get to that, you’ll register for your classes and meet your academic advisor one-on-one.  If you’re not 100% sure you’ve picked the right classes, don’t worry!  Your academic advisor will review your choices with you and make sure you’re on the right track.

You must meet with your assigned academic advisor before the start of the Spring semester.  If you’re not sure who that is, you can check the “Academic Advising” link, in the Academics tab on your StudentLink.  To set up your meeting, you’re going to need to login to Handshake.  Handshake is BU’s online hub for career resources, including internship and job listings, in the U.S. as well as around the world.  It’s also where you’ll schedule appointments with both academic and career advisors in the UDC.

To get started, go to bu.joinhandshake.com/login and then follow the instructions here to make your appointment.  Also, keep an eye on your email as your advisor will be reaching out to you this summer as well about this important appointment!

As we approach the start of the school year, we’ll transition away from this Questrom Orientation website and towards a number of other sites you’ll find helpful:

  • questromworld.bu.edu/udc – The UDC’s main page.  Go here for all things Academic and Career.  Curriculum, resume guides, concentrations, policies, and forms!
  • questromtools.bu.edu – Questrom’s version of Blackboard.  On QuestromTools you’ll find your Questrom syllabi, course assignments, and a dashboard of announcements.
  • questromapps.bu.edu – On QuestromApps, you’ll find the Questrom events calendar, the faculty and staff directories, and many other things

What is Questrom Tools?

Questrom Tools (questromtools.bu.edu) is a Learning Management System designed to assist instructors, students, and researchers in the creation and use of websites for teaching and collaborative purposes. A Questrom Tools course site is created for all Questrom courses shortly before the beginning of each semester and registered students are automatically added to their appropriate course sites. You may be able to log in sooner, but until a professor chooses to publish their site (usually late August for the fall term and early January for the Spring term), even if you are properly registered for the course, you will not see the site.
