Financial Aid

Enrollment Status

Enrollment Status Information

Full-Time Status

Individuals who register for 12 or more credits are considered full-time students by the University and are charged a flat full-time tuition rate during the academic year, which covers 12 to 18 credits per semester.  International students are required to be enrolled full-time each semester of the academic year (Fall/Spring).

Three-Quarter Status

Three-quarter time refers to a student’s enrollment status where they are taking roughly 75% of a full-time course load, typically meaning they are registered for 9-11 credit hours.

Part-Time Status

Students may register for up to 11.5 credits in a given semester to maintain part-time enrollment status. Part-time students are charged at the per-credit rate for the semester in which they are enrolled. Students must remain enrolled in at least 6 credits to receive federal financial aid funding.

International Student Enrollment

International students are required to be enrolled full-time each semester of the academic year (Fall/Spring). However, with the permission of the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO), international students with F-1 immigration status can apply for a reduced course load and enroll less than full-time in their final semester of study during the academic year.

Leave of Absence (LOA)

A leave of absence is a temporary interruption in studies, typically for a full semester. Tuition is cancelled in accordance with the published tuition refund schedule. If a student is absent for a semester without arranging for an approved leave, re-enrollment into one’s degree program cannot be guaranteed. Please reach out to your Academic Advisor, who can provide you more information about the leave of absence process.

Withdrawal (WD)

Students who decide not to continue their program of study at BU, or who enroll as a degree candidate elsewhere, must officially withdraw. Tuition is cancelled in accordance with the published tuition refund schedule. Please reach out to your Academic Advisor, who can provide you more information about the withdrawal process.

Changes to Enrollment

  • Merit Scholarship Impact

If a student is a merit scholarship recipient, changes to their enrollment could impact scholarship eligibility. Most merit scholarships require at least 3 credits enrollment per semester. Merit scholarships are also subject to proration based on enrollment. Please refer to your scholarship terms & conditions for specific scholarship requirements or contact Questrom Financial Assistance.

    Earning Your Aid

If a student has been awarded federal financial aid, but then changes their enrollment or stops attending, their federal financial aid eligibility must be re-calculated based on their adjusted enrollment. Federal financial aid is awarded based on the dates to which students are registered for each semester. Students “earn” federal financial aid by attending courses during their scheduled enrollment period.

  • Tuition Refund Schedule

Students making enrollment changes such as adding and dropping classes must refer to Student Accounting Services’ Tuition Refund Schedule. Student Services and other fees are non-refundable as of the first day of the semester, and deposits toward tuition and/or room and board are also non-refundable.

Students who process their LOA or WD prior to the start of the semester, will have 100% tuition refund/cancelation of charges. Students who process their LOA or WD after the start of the semester are subject to a partial tuition refund based on the date the course is dropped.

Students who drop courses from their schedule, but still remain enrolled in at least one course, will get a 100% tuition refund/cancellation of charges for the dropped course up until the “last day to drop without a W” date. Once this date has passed, the student will have the course dropped with a W grade, and cannot have any of the tuition for that course canceled.

  • Return of Title IV (R2T4)

The Return of Title IV (R2T4) calculation determines the percentage of the original federal award amount that was earned prior to your official withdrawal or drop date.

Once a student takes a leave of absence or withdraws from the university, BU Financial Aid will determine the earned and unearned portions of federal Title IV financial aid, as of the date the student ceased attendance. When a student takes a leave or withdraws from Questrom before completing the required period of scheduled enrollment in any semester, Questrom must return a portion of the Title IV financial aid loan funds (R2T4) to the respective federal lenders. The result is an immediate balance owed to Questrom.

    Federal Loan Repayment

Taking a leave of absence or withdrawing can affect federal student loan repayment. Generally, the six-month grace period for federal student loans begins upon leaving school, including during a leave of absence or a withdrawal. Changes to enrollment may require students to complete Exit Loan Counseling, which explains repayment obligations and provides federal repayment options.
