Registration Info

Adding Courses

Registering for Courses

All students register for courses on MyBU Student.  Among other things, MyBU Student allows you to map out your courses in the student planner before registration day, view Course Information including title, description, meeting times, classroom location, and more, and register for courses once registration opens.  This video will walk you through many of the processes outlined in the User Guides below!

MyBU Student Portal User Guides:

Preparing for Registration | Class Search | Schedule Builder

Compliance: Please note that students who are not compliant with the University will be prohibited from registering for courses. For more information, please visit the University Registrar’s web site.

Requesting a Course that is Full or Closed

To request a course that is full or closed, please submit the Questrom Waitlist Request Form.  As seats become available, students will be registered in the order in which their request was received. If you are registered for the course, you will receive a notification from the Questrom Registrar’s Office.

Registering for Non-Questrom Courses

Course enrollments are controlled by the respective schools and colleges within Boston University. For enrollment in a non-Questrom course you may first try adding the course in MyBU Student. If you are prevented from adding the course you will need to speak with the appropriate school for enrollment. To use non-Questrom courses toward your degree, you must have the prior approval of both the host school and the MBA Center. For approval, complete a Questrom Graduate Elective Request Form and submit it along with a course description and syllabus at least two weeks prior to the start of the class to your advisor. You will be notified of a decision within two weeks.

For students taking online courses

For any courses or programs which contain distance education or online courses, Boston University’s State Authorization Information & supporting information for students may be found here: https://www.bu.edu/state-authorization/

Dropping a Course

Dropping a Course

Students can use MyBU Student Portal to drop courses until the last day to drop with a “W” grade. Please click here to see the drop deadlines. For courses with non-standard dates, please click on the date range in the course schedule for course-specific deadlines.

Withdrawing from the Semester & Taking a Leave of Absence: During the Fall and Spring semesters, you won’t be able to drop all of your classes. If you want to drop all of your classes, or if you do not plan to enroll during a particular Fall or Spring semester, you must complete a Withdrawal/Leave of Absence Form with your assigned advisor. Reminder: If you withdraw or take a leave of absence after the start of classes, Student Accounts will only refund a portion of your tuition based on the Withdrawal and Tuition Refund Schedule published by the Office of the University Registrar. Additionally, students may not withdraw from a semester in which they already have a posted grade.

Dropping a Course in the Summer: Students may withdraw from a course in either summer session using MyBU Student Portal prior to the first day of the summer session. If the drop is processed prior to the first day of either term, full tuition and fees will be credited or refunded. If the drop is processed on or after the first day of either summer session and before the published drop date, the student is responsible for the registration fee only. If the drop is processed after the date published by the MBA Center, the student is responsible for the full tuition and fees and will receive a ‘W’ for the course.  Unlike the Fall and Spring semesters, students can drop all of their summer session courses on MyBU Student Portal.

Registration Policies

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for all courses are listed on the FTMBA and PEMBA Programs charts, as well as on BU Course Search. It is important that you adhere to course pre-requisites, and students without a pre-requisite may be asked to drop the course.

Course Overlap Policy

Students cannot be registered in two or more classes that meet at the same time as listed on the published schedule.

Overloading

Please keep in mind that once students meet their degree requirements, they will graduate from the program. Students cannot take additional courses beyond the semester in which they have completed their degree requirements.

Standard full-time tuition covers 12-18 credits per semester. All full-time students can automatically take up to 18 credits per semester. Overloading is registering for more than 18 credits in a semester.  Every additional credit beyond 18 credits will incur per-credit charges. If your program requires you to take a course load beyond 18 credits, you will automatically be granted an overload covering the additional charges.

Note: There are different overload policies varying by program and start date, please see the Course Overload Policy & Form page for full information.

Full-Time Status

Individuals who register for 12 or more credits are considered full-time students by the University and are charged a flat full-time tuition rate during the academic year, which covers 12-18 credits. International students on a student visa are required to be enrolled full-time each academic semester. Full-time international students may, with the permission of the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO), enroll less than full-time in their final semester of study. International students with an H-1 visa who have been full-time throughout their enrollment may enroll part-time in their last semester of study.

FAQs

FAQs

Q: Why can I not find any graduate courses when I search the schedule on the Student Link?
A: When searching the class schedule on the Student Link, please be sure to search “QST” as the college. Courses will be numbered in the 700s for core classes and 800s for electives. Courses 500 and below are undergraduate courses.

Q: When I try to register, why am I not finding the courses I am looking for?
A: When registering for courses, please be sure you are looking at the correct semester. When you go to the “Registration” section of the Student Link please be sure to select “REG Options” under the appropriate semester. If you wish to register for a fall course, your current spring schedule will appear first so you must scroll down to reach your fall record.

Q: Why can I not register?
A: Boston University requires that all students be compliant in five areas in order to register for courses. In order to be compliant, students must have:

  1. Settled their student account for the current semester.
  2. Met all immunization requirements.
  3. Provided BU with an emergency alert phone number and updated/verified this emergency number each semester.
  4. Acknowledged the Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Law (all out-of-state students must sign an acknowledgement that they have been informed of the law; compliance required in the Fall semester only).
  5. Provided a current local address.

If you do not comply with any of the above items, your registration will be blocked for all future semesters. To check your compliance status, please click ‘compliance status’ under the purple ‘personal’ tab on the Student Link.
