Student Loan Repayment

Student loan repayment is the process of paying back the money borrowed for a student loan. Repayment begins after graduation, dropping below half-time enrollment, or leaving school.

Federal Loan Repayment

Loan repayment terms and conditions are set by the Federal Government – More information can be found on the Department of Education’s Federal Loan Repayment page.

Private Loan Repayment

Loan repayment terms and conditions are set by your Private Loan Servicer and vary from servicer to servicer – More information can be found on your Private Loan Servicer’s webpage.

Before You Graduate

Review Borrowing History

Know the current loan type, balance, interest rate, and servicer for each student loan.

Outreach Your Loan Servicer

Reach out to your student loan servicer – it is their job to help you understand your loans and assist with processing your loan payments.

Set Up Loan Repayment Profile

You can find the most detailed and up-to-date information about your loans on your servicer’s website. Be sure your contact information is correct.

Complete Federal Loan Exit Counseling

All federal student loan borrowers must complete Federal Exit Counseling. The purpose of exit counseling is to ensure you understand your student loan obligations and are prepared for repayment.

After You Graduate

Know When Repayment Begins

Know when you must begin making payments and how much. This information can be determined through your servicer.

Manage Your Money

Create a budget to determine how much you can realistically afford to pay each month toward your student loans. Additional help can be found on the FSA Budgeting page.

Consolidation or Refinancing

If loan payments become unmanageable, determine if Consolidating or Refinancing your loans is right for you.

Select Your Repayment Plan

Choose a repayment plan that fits your goals by using the Federal Repayment Estimator. Private loan borrowers should reach out to their servicer and inquire about payment plans.
