Public Service Loan Forgiveness

PSLF Requirements

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program offers students forgiveness of the remaining balance on their federal loans after they have made 120 (10 years) payments under a qualifying repayment plan. However, the loan will only be forgiven if students meet all PSLF Program eligibility conditions. More information can be found on the Department of Education’s Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) page.

Employment

Be employed by a U.S. federal, state, local, or tribal government or qualifying not-for-profit organization (federal service includes U.S. military service)

Employment Status

Work full-time for the federal or non-profit agency or organization

Federal Direct Loans

Have Federal Direct Loans (or consolidate other federal student loans into a Direct Loan)

Repayment Plans

Repay your loans under an income-driven repayment plan or a Standard Repayment Plan.

Qualifying Payments

Make a total of 120 qualifying monthly payments that need not be consecutive.

Employer Eligibility Tool

  • If you are considering applying for PSLF program but are unsure if your employer qualifies, this tool provides a quick and easy method to look them up.
  • Qualifying employers include governmental employers and many not-for-profit organizations. Use our search tool to find out if your employer is among them.

PSLF Help Tool

  • Use the PSLF Help Tool to search for a qualifying employer, learn what actions you may need to take to become eligible for PSLF, and generate a PSLF form. You will need to provide an email address for an authorized official who can certify your employment and sign your form.
  • After you submit your PSLF form, FSA will process it, and you will receive a count of the number of qualifying payments you have made toward both PSLF and TEPSLF. You can see updates by logging into StudentAid.gov and visiting My Activity.
