Technology While Traveling
Prepare your devices and BU access before you leave, and know how to connect securely to University resources while traveling in the U.S. or abroad.
BEFORE YOU GO
Prepare Before You Travel
A few checks before departure can prevent account, connectivity, and data-access problems later—especially when traveling internationally.
Update your devices
Install current operating system, browser, application, and security updates before you leave.
Confirm Duo works
Make sure your enrolled Duo device is available and working before departure. Duo Mobile can generate passcodes even without cellular service or Wi-Fi.
Install VPN before you leave
If you expect to use resources that require the BU VPN, install and test Cisco Secure Client before traveling.
Back up important files
Store working files in an approved BU storage location so you can recover them if your device is lost, damaged, or unavailable.
REMOTE ACCESS
Access BU Resources Away From Campus
Most BU cloud services work normally from off campus. Some network-restricted resources require VPN or another remote-access method.
Use BU Cloud Services
Services such as Blackboard, Microsoft 365, BU Google Mail, and many other web-based applications generally do not require VPN access.
Connect With BU VPN
VPN is used for network-restricted resources such as some shared drives, departmental systems, remote computers, and other campus-only services.
Use a Remote Computing Environment
If you need Windows-only software while traveling, Dizzion Frame or BU Common may provide remote access without installing the application locally.
DEVICE SECURITY
Protect Your Devices While Traveling
Travel can increase the risk of lost devices, insecure networks, and unauthorized access. Use a few basic precautions whenever you are away from your normal environment.
Avoid untrusted public Wi-Fi when possible
Prefer a personal hotspot or other trusted connection. BU recommends using VPN when appropriate on open networks such as airports, hotels, and cafés.
Keep devices physically secure
Use a password or biometric lock, enable device-location or remote-wipe features where available, and do not leave devices unattended.
Bluetooth / Wi-Fi
Turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and location services when they are not being used.
Do not use unknown USB drives
Avoid connecting storage devices or accessories obtained from unknown or untrusted sources while traveling.
Sensitive data
If your work involves sensitive University, research, student, or regulated information, consider whether the data needs to travel with you at all.
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL
Traveling Abroad for BU?
University-sponsored international travel has additional planning, safety, and compliance requirements.
Register University-Sponsored Travel
BU’s Travel Risk Management service provides pre-departure information and travel alerts for University-sponsored international travel. If travel is not booked through a BU travel agency, travelers may need to register their itinerary directly.
RESEARCH & SENSITIVE DATA
Additional Requirements May Apply
International travel involving research, controlled technology, encrypted equipment, or sensitive data may require additional review before departure.
Traveling to a country where VPN or encryption is restricted? Check destination-specific requirements before departure. BU notes that VPN availability may be limited in some countries and that some destinations impose restrictions on encrypted devices or technology.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Quick Answers
Can I use Duo without cellular service?
Yes. Duo Mobile can generate an authentication passcode without cellular service or Wi-Fi.
Will BU VPN work in every country?
Not necessarily. BU notes that access to the University VPN may be limited or restricted in some countries. Check before departure if VPN access is important to your work.
Should I use airport or hotel Wi-Fi?
Use caution with public wireless networks. A personal hotspot or trusted connection is preferable when available, and VPN can provide additional protection when using compatible BU resources.
What should I do if my device is lost or stolen while traveling?
Secure your accounts and report the loss promptly. If University information may be exposed, follow BU security incident guidance as well as any local reporting requirements.
