BU VPN
Securely connect to Boston University’s network when you’re away from campus and access resources that are normally available only through the BU network.
WHEN TO USE IT
When Do I Need the BU VPN?
You don’t need VPN for every BU service. Use it when you’re away from campus and need to reach a resource that normally expects you to be connected to the University’s network.
Questrom Network Drives
Connect to the VPN before accessing QSTShare and other Questrom network drives from an off-campus connection.
Remote Desktop
VPN may be required before connecting remotely to a BU computer or device that is available only from the University’s internal network.
Restricted BU Resources
Some departmental servers, databases, printers, applications, and other network resources are available only from the BU network.
GET CONNECTED
Connect to the BU VPN
BU uses Cisco Secure Client for VPN access. Install the client once, then connect whenever you need access to a BU network-restricted resource.
01
Download Cisco Secure Client
Visit vpn.bu.edu, sign in with your BU credentials, complete Duo authentication, and download the client for your operating system.
02
Install the Client
Open the downloaded installer and complete the Cisco Secure Client installation. Administrator access to your computer may be required.
03
Connect to BU
Open Cisco Secure Client and enter vpn.bu.edu in the connection field, then select Connect.
04
Sign In & Approve Duo
Enter your BU login name and password, then complete the Duo authentication prompt to establish the connection.
Signing in? Use your BU login name — the portion before @bu.edu — rather than your full BU email address.
BEFORE YOU CONNECT
What You Need
Make sure your account, device, and Internet connection are ready before starting the VPN.
Active BU Account
VPN requires a BU login name and password authorized for VPN access. Most eligible BU accounts receive access automatically, although authorization can depend on University affiliation.
Duo Two-Factor Authentication
Duo is required when connecting to the BU VPN. If you’re already enrolled in Duo for BU services, you don’t need to enroll again.
Internet Connection
VPN still needs a working Internet connection. If websites aren’t loading before you connect, resolve the Internet connection first.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Having Trouble Connecting?
Start with the basics before reinstalling anything. Many VPN problems come down to connectivity, credentials, account access, or the network you’re using.
Check Your Internet Connection
Confirm that you can open normal websites before launching the VPN. If you can’t, the issue is with your Internet connection rather than the VPN.
Check Your Login
Use only your BU login name — not the full @bu.edu email address — and your current BU password.
Try Another Network
Some workplaces, countries, firewalls, or networks may restrict VPN traffic. If the same computer works on another Internet connection, the original network may be blocking the VPN..
GOOD TO KNOW
Using the VPN Effectively
VPN is designed for specific remote-access needs. Knowing when to use it — and when you don’t need it — can make working remotely simpler.
You Don't Need VPN for Everything
Most cloud services such as Microsoft 365, OneDrive, SharePoint, Google Drive, Blackboard, and other web-based BU services can be accessed directly without first connecting to VPN.
Disconnect When You're Finished
When you no longer need a network-restricted BU resource, disconnect from Cisco Secure Client. You can reconnect whenever you need it again.
VPN Isn't a Replacement for eduroam
When you’re physically at BU, use eduroam as your normal wireless network. VPN is primarily useful when you are off campus and need access to network-restricted BU resources. BU recommends eduroam for secure wireless access where it is available.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Quick Answers
What server do I enter in Cisco Secure Client?
Enter vpn.bu.edu in the VPN connection field.
Do I need Duo to use the VPN?
Yes. Duo Two-Factor Authentication is required when logging in to the BU VPN.
Can I use the built-in VPN on Windows or Mac?
No. BU no longer supports the built-in VPN clients in Windows or macOS for its two-factor VPN. Use Cisco Secure Client instead.
Do I need VPN to access Questrom network drives from home?
Yes. Connect to the BU VPN before accessing Questrom shared network drives such as QSTShare from off campus.
Still Having Trouble Connecting?
If Cisco Secure Client won't connect, Duo authentication isn't completing, or you can connect to the VPN but still can't reach the BU resource you need, contact the IT Help Center and tell them which resource you're trying to access.
