Peter Slavin, MD, MBA – President, Massachusetts General Hospital

Dr. Slavin will introduce the conference’s key theme of patient-centered care and frame the major opportunities for a better healthcare system by exploring a three-pronged strategy, or “prescription.” Massachusetts General Hospital ranks among the most accomplished and innovative medical institutions in the world. But how does it maintain this status in such a convoluted system?

The focus of the following TED-style talks will be on specific applications of innovation across a range of organizations within the health sector. We will present three unique speakers who will each share examples of such innovations in practice.

10:20 – 11:00 Technology Keynote

Ido Schoenberg, MD – Chairman and CEO of American Well

Dr. Schoenberg will discuss the implications and challenges of telehealth. Healthcare reform has introduced drastic changes to the landscape of medicine, and telehealth stands out as one of the most intriguing and exciting trends both in America and across the globe. American Well is the nation’s largest telehealth operator, and brings quality healthcare into the homes and workplaces of patients.

11:15 – 11:55 Biopharmaceutical Keynote

Alexandra “Sandra” Glucksmann, PhD – COO of Editas Medicine

Dr. Glucksmann will discuss the challenges and opportunities of biotech, and how problem-focused solutions can help look beyond traditional disciplines, allowing leaders to approach healthcare problems from perspectives that often result in surprising and disruptive innovations. CRISPR/Cas, a system used for genome editing that corrects errors in the genetic code, is one of the newest innovations in genomics, and Editas Medicine has a patent on this technology.

11:55am – 12:20pm Lightning Round

Dr. Churchwell will discuss the importance of systematic and continuous improvement in healthcare through quality metrics. The goal in assessing performance is to create a system that promotes the best clinical standards and ensures the highest quality of patient care through transparency, accountability, and credibility. Kevin has been one of the driving forces behind improving the effectiveness and efficacy of the care provided at Boston Children’s while striving to reduce the costs of care.

3:50 – 4:30 Insurance Keynote

Andrew Dreyfus – President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

Mr. Dreyfus will discuss lessons and strategies from Massachusetts’ pioneering efforts to tackle healthcare costs. This keynote will give an insider’s view on the state’s transformation towards more value-based care – the results of payment reforms, the impact on providers, and insights into the changing role of consumers in the health care marketplace. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is one of the largest independent, not-for-profit Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in the country, and the largest health plan in the state of Massachusetts.

Mike Phalen, MBA – VP and President of MedSurg, Boston Scientific Corporation

Mr. Phalen will discuss the impact of medical technology on patient health around the world.
