Matt joined Parthenon in the autumn of 2010, after working in both public and private sectors within theeducation industry. Matt previously worked at McKinsey & Co., where he led strategy and organization work in a wide range of contexts, from highly successful FTSE 3 companies and mid-caps to public sector institutions and government departments. For seven years, Matt worked in the education support services sector, holding P&L responsibility. He led teams working on school improvement (National Challenge), academy development, the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, and on children’s services technology and management information. Since joining Parthenon, Matt has led our education work in the UK and Europe. He has led work across every stage and sub-sector of education in the UK and across Europe, including public and private schools (K-12), vocational and further education, universities and support services. He has worked in buy and sell-side diligence, international strategy, marketing and sales force strategy and general corporate strategy. Matt holds a degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge and was the Gatsby Scholar.

Johan Roos, PhD, Dean, CEO and Managing Director, Jönköping International Business School (JIBS)

Johan Roos is Dean and Managing Director of Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) in Sweden since January 2012.

He holds a PhD in International Business from the Stockholm School of Economics, from 1989. He has held faculty positions at Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, at the Norwegian Questrom School of Business (BI) in Oslo, and for more than five years at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne.

He was the co-founder and Managing Director of Imagination Lab Foundation in Switzerland before returning to the business school world. After holding the Bo Rydin and SCA Professorship of Strategy and serving as Dean of MBA Programs at Stockholm School of Economics, he served as President of Copenhagen Business School 2009-2011.

Over the last 25 years his research have focused on strategic and leadership processes in alliance formation, knowledge management and strategy. He is the author or co-author of some 80 articles, book chapters and books as well as of some 65 case studies, papers and articles for practitioners. He has published in many prestigious journals, is a regular contributor to international academic conferences and he serves as a peer-reviewer for premier scholarly journals.

From 2005 to 2007, he served as Director of the Bureau of Economics at the United States Federal Trade Commission. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from MIT and a B.A. from Yale.

David Schmittlein, PhD, John C Head III Dean, MIT Sloan Questrom School of Business

David Schmittlein joined the MIT Sloan Questrom School of Business as John C Head III Dean in October, 2007. His focus, since arriving on campus, has been to broaden MIT Sloan’s global visibility, work with the faculty to create new high-quality management education programs, develop enhanced educational opportunities for current students, and to develop and disseminate business knowledge that has impact and will stand the test of time. He has also reached out to the many members of MIT’s alumni community to gain their valuable insights on MIT Sloan and management education.

Prior to his appointment at MIT Sloan, Dean Schmittlein served on the faculty at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania from 1980 until 2007. While at Wharton, he was the Ira A. Lipman Professor and Professor of Marketing. He also served as Interim Dean during July 2007 and as Deputy Dean from 2000-2007. In addition, he was chair of the editorial board for Wharton School Publishing. Dean Schmittlein received a Ph.D. and M.Phil. in Business from Columbia University and B.A. in Mathematics (magna cum laude) from Brown University. His research assesses marketing processes and develops methods for improving marketing decisions. He is widely regarded for his work estimating the impact of a firm’s marketing actions, designing market and survey research, and creating effective communication strategies.

Dr. Schmittlein has served as a consultant on these issues for numerous firms, e.g. American Express, American Home Products, AT&T, Bausch & Lomb, Boston Scientific, Ford Motor Company, Gianni Versace S.p.A., Hewlett-Packard, Johnson & Johnson, Lockheed Martin, Pfizer, Revlon, Siebe PLC, The Oakland Raiders, The Quaker Oats Co., and Time Warner. He has over forty publications, most in leading journals in Marketing, Management, Economics and Statistics. He has been an area editor for Marketing Science and a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Interactive Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Letters and Marketing Science.

Dr. Schmittlein serves on the International Advisory Board for Groupe HEC; the Governing Board of the Indian School of Business; the International Advisory Board of Lingnan (University) College of Sun Yat-sen University; the Advisory Board for the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University; the International Advisory Board for the Questrom School of Business, Fudan University; and the Board of Trustees of The Conference Board. He has served on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council for Marketing and Branding. He has been a visiting professor in the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo University, and a Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Washington University’s John M. Olin School of Business. He has received awards for his research, his editorial work, and his teaching. His observations and research have been cited often in the popular press, including Advertising Age, Business 2.0, Business Week, China.com, Computerworld, Fortune, NPR’s Marketplace, People’s Daily Online, Reuters, The ABC Evening News with Peter Jennings, The Economist, The Financial Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, U.S. News & World Report and USA Today.

Michael Schrage examines the various roles of models, prototypes, and simulations as collaborative media for innovation risk management. He has served as an advisor on innovation issues and investments to major firms, including Mars, Procter & Gamble, Google, Intel, BT, Siemens, NASDAQ, IBM, and Alcoa.

In addition, Schrage has advised segments of the national security community on cyberconflict and cybersecurity issues. He has presented workshops on design experimentation and innovation risk for businesses, organizations, and executive education programs worldwide. Along with running summer workshops on future technologies for the Pentagon’s Office of Net Assessment, he has served on the technical advisory committee of MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory. In collaboration with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Schrage helped launch a series of workshops sponsored by the Department of Defense on federal complex systems procurement. In 2007, he served as a judge for the Industrial Designers Society of America’s global International Design Excellence Awards.

Schrage authored the lead chapter on governance in complex systems acquisition in Organizing for a Complex World (CSIS 2009). He has been a contributor to such prestigious publications as the Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal,strategy+business, IEEE Software, and the Design Management Journal. In his best-selling book,Serious Play (Harvard Business School Press, 2000), Schrage explores the culture, economics, and future of prototyping. Dr. Lee is Chairman of Next and Partners. Currently, he serves as President of UNGC Korea Network.

He served Samsung for 30 years. He led disruptive transformation of Samsung Group as Head of New Management Team at Samsung Chairman’s Office, and then he became President and CEO of Samsung Corporation.

Thereafter, he founded Homeplus, a joint venture company between Samsung and Tesco in 1997 and became the first President and CEO. He led the unprecedented level of growth at Homeplus, moving to the leading position from the 12th, very last position in only 5 years. He created innovative store formats such as the world’s first “virtual store.” In 2003, he became Chairman of Homeplus; Tesco Academy; and eParan Foundation.

He has been a Board Member of HSDM at Harvard University since 2004. He is ajoint head professor for CEO Sustainability Management Forum at Seoul National University, adjunct professor at Yonsei University, and endowed-chair professor Seoul Cyber University.

In 2013, as a visiting scholar and Executive-in-Residence (EIR) at Boston University, he led roundtable sessions for 6months to discuss and explore “the Essence of Management” in depth with a group of senior professors.

He holds Honorary Ph.D. in Business Management and Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Engineering.

Scott Simon, Former Managing Director of PIMCO

Scott Simon has thirty years of experience investing in mortgage backed securities. During his tenure at PIMCO from 2000 to 2013, he was a Managing Director and Head of Mortgage and Asset-Backed Securities Portfolio Management, a rotating member of the firm’s Investment Committee and co-head of the firm’s Private Equity style funds. Scott spearheaded PIMCO’s research and views on residential real estate starting in 2005, positioning the firm’s accounts for outperformance through the extreme housing and MBS volatility that followed.

Prior to joining PIMCO, Scott was the Co-Head of MBS Trading at Bear Stearns from 1995-1999 and Head of MBS Trading at UBS from 1989-1995. Scott spent 1984 to 1989 as a mortgage and arbitrage trader at Lehman Brothers and Goldman Sachs.  Though his role was always as a trader, he was voted onto the Institutional Investor All-America Fixed Income Research Team seven times, including first place awards for mortgage strategies and Mortgage Backed Securities.

Mr. Simon attended Stanford University where he earned a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering and a self-designed Bachelor’s Degree.
